VAT Calculator – Add or Remove VAT

Work out the VAT amount, the price before VAT and the total price. Choose a GCC rate or enter your own.

VAT rates and rules can change. Check the current rate with your tax authority before issuing invoices. This tool does not provide tax advice.

How to use the vat calculator

  1. Enter the amount.
  2. Choose whether to add VAT or remove VAT from it.
  3. Pick a country rate or type a custom rate, then press Calculate VAT.

How it works

Adding VAT: VAT = price × rate ÷ 100, and total = price + VAT.

Removing VAT: price before VAT = total ÷ (1 + rate ÷ 100), and VAT = total − price before VAT. Do not simply subtract the rate percentage from the total, because that gives a wrong result.

The preset rates reflect standard rates in the UAE (5%), Saudi Arabia (15%), Bahrain (10%) and Oman (5%) at the time of writing.

Example

Adding 5% VAT to 1,000 gives VAT of 50 and a total of 1,050. Removing 5% VAT from 1,050 gives a price before VAT of 1,000 and VAT of 50.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate VAT backwards from a total?

Divide the total by 1 plus the rate. For 5% VAT, divide by 1.05. The difference between the total and the result is the VAT.

What is the VAT rate in the UAE?

The standard VAT rate in the UAE is 5%, with some supplies zero-rated or exempt.

Can I use a different rate?

Yes. Type a custom rate in the box and it will be used instead of the list.
