BMI Calculator

Estimate body mass index (BMI) from height and weight, using metric or imperial units.

BMI is a screening estimate, not a diagnosis. Adult BMI categories may not apply to children, pregnancy, or all body types. Consult a healthcare professional for personal advice.

How to use the bmi calculator

  1. Choose metric or imperial units.
  2. Enter your weight and height.
  3. Press Calculate BMI to see your BMI and the adult category.

How it works

BMI = weight in kilograms ÷ height in metres squared. For imperial units, the calculator first converts pounds, feet and inches to kilograms and metres.

Common adult categories are: under 18.5 underweight, 18.5 to 24.9 healthy range, 25 to 29.9 overweight and 30 or above in the obesity range. BMI does not measure body fat directly, so muscle mass, age and body type can affect how well it describes your health.

Example

A person weighing 70 kg who is 175 cm tall has a BMI of 70 ÷ (1.75 × 1.75) = 22.9, which is in the healthy range.
